Field Fence

When building a fence around your farm or ranch, a good fence post is necessary to ensure that your fence remains strong and can keep the animals inside. There are many different types of field fence posts available in the market. Some of them include -

  • Metal T Post: They are one of the most used post types and come in all sizes. It is very easy to install a metal T post and often requires only a few tools to do so. They are long lasting, easily moveable and are generally a cheaper option when compared to other post types like a wooden post. The cost of a metal T post falls in the lower to mid-range price bracket and it offers a cheap solution for farm owners to quickly install fence posts across their farm without wasting too much time.
  • Step In Post: These are even cheaper than metal T posts but are not suitable for woven wire. They are only used for temporary electric fencing. They can be easily bought from any local store. You don’t need any extra materials to get the wires attached to the post and as such offer a very fast way to build a fence around your farm or ranch – you can basically just push the posts down the ground with your feet without needing any other equipment like a sledge hammer. They are lightweight and therefore are not suitable for fencing for large animals.

  • Treated Wooden Post: Such wooden posts are treated with chemicals to ensure that they become resistant to rot. This significantly increases their lifespan. They are often uniform in size and therefore make the fence look aesthetically pleasing. They are more expensive than metal T posts and step in posts.
  • Locust Post: They are wooden posts but do not require any chemical washing to make them resistant to rot since they naturally have that quality. They fall into the lower price bracket and are much cheaper than treated wooden posts.
Ultimately, the type of fieldfence post you wish to use on your farm or ranch depends on your preferences and the type of animals in the farm. If you want aesthetically pleasing posts around your ranch, then you may go for treated wooden posts, but if you need a cheaper wooden post and are willing to sacrifice on the aesthetics, you can go for the locust posts. Your local fence supplier can help you identify the best fence posts for your property.

The type of animals you need to contain will affect which type of field fence you require. There are three main types of fencing and sometimes two options can be combined for greater security.
  • Woven Wire: High tensile woven wire fencing is a very effective barrier for a wide range of animals including cattle, sheep and goats. You can buy woven wire fence with different spacings between the vertical wires depending on your requirements. Solid vertical wires and  strong knots in the fencing help to provide strength to resist impact from large animals; the knots can also create highly visible barrier to help deter animal impact. Woven wire fence can also be combined with strands of barbed wire as a further deterrent. Alternatively, a top line of plain wire can be electrified to prevent animals pushing downwards on the top of the fence.
  • Barbed Wire: Barbed wires consist of two twisted wires, with sharp barbs placed at regular intervals. Barbed wire is particularly useful for containing cattle and deer. It should never be electrified.
  • Electric Fencing: Electric fencing can be combined with woven wire to increase security. Electric wire can be useful for cattle, sheep and goats. A lower strand of electric wire can be used in paddocks for sheep and goats to deter predators and prevent animals from escaping underneath the wire. A top line of electric wire can be used to prevent downwards pressure on the fence from larger animals such as cattle.
When choosing between the different types of fencing for your field fence project it is helpful to consult with your local supplier to purchase the most suitable product for the type of livestock you have.
